Presentations and Field Trips

Presentations
A unique part of the Japan: Culture and Language Program is the series of presentations about Japanese culture. Conducted both by faculty and outsiders, these presentations cover a wide range of topics and provide an opportunity for JCLP participants to get a deeper insight into Japanese culture and way of life. Many of the presentations are "hands on" activities, giving JCLP participants the chance to take a mini-lesson in a Japanese art. For participants whose Japanese-language skills are not up to the level of the presentations, some English support is also available. Since most of the presentations involve "hands on" activities, even limited language is usually enough.
Sample presentations:
Flower arrangement
Japanese drumming
Calligraphy
Martial arts
Cooking
Japanese paper craft
Tea ceremony
and more
(topics may vary depending on staffing schedules)
JCLP students enjoy a hotspring bath
Field Trips
Field trips are a major part of the JCLP curriculum and are included without additional charge. These have included tours to points of architectural significance, sake breweries, and trips to places of cultural interest. Other field trips have included a visit to an important shrine and a cablecar ride up a mountain for a scenic overlook of the Japan Sea, and a ride on a nostalgic steam train.
All transportation is by school van (except tour boats and steam train) and field trips are guided by a friendly, English-speaking Keiwa College faculty member. Lunches at local restaurants or c in the case of the festivals, at food booths are included in the participation fees of the JCLP. There are no hidden charges. (destinations may vary depending on weather, and guide schedules)
