The field of TEFL/TESL encompasses many subfields, or special interests, that concern language researchers and language teachers. The aspects of my field that interest me the most are the following: educational materials development, student motivation, critical thinking in language classes, and global and local social issues connected with the development of communication skills. At Keiwa College, I teach English communication skills and content-based language classes. Therefore, I am able to observe how our students are motivated or not motivated by teaching materials. Based on those observations, I search for, create, or revise the materials my students will study in the future. Being able to teach students about global and social issues provides me with opportunities to insert critical thinking activities into language lessons. I assess student progress and revise my teaching accordingly. Every lesson is an opportunity for educational research.
