June, 6, 2019.
Kota Yamada
President of Keiwa College
Good morning, Prof. Fisher & Lee Students. Welcome to Niigata Prefecture, Shibata City & Seiro Town, and welcome to Keiwa College.
Is this your first visit to Japan? To Niigata Pref.? Niigata means New Lagoon in English. There used to be lots of lagoons around here, near the river mouths of the Shinano River, the longest river in Japan, and the Agano River, the tenth longest river in Japan. Most of these lagoons are now drained to be cultivated lands, but two or three lagoons are still remained around here.
Niigata Pref. is very famous for her brand rice in Japan. The name of the rice is Koshi Hikari, Koshi is an ancient name for Niigata, and Hikari means the light, shining light; that is, the light of Niigata. Please remember the taste of Koshi Hikari, wherever you may eat rice in Niigata Pref. Koshi Hikari will be served. When you go out of Niigata Pref., you will notice the difference of the taste of rice.
Keiwa College is a four-year Christian liberal arts college. Our religious background is UCCJ, the United Church of Christ in Japan. The number of students this year is 667, including 41 full-time foreign students. They are from China, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and Ghana.
