2006年4月1日から2008年3月31日までの2年間にわたって本学に多大な貢献をしてくださいましたオリバー・ローズ先生（英語教育）からの退職のごあいさつをお届けします。

It has been a rich and rewarding couple of years here in Shibata, but now that I have a baby daughter it will be good for my family to move closer to my wife’s hometown of Kobe. In our time here we have enjoyed exploring many beautiful places in Niigata,including Sado Island and the amazing mountains nearby. I find the snowy landscape very beautiful, so I was glad to see so much snow this year, after getting almost none last year!

As a teacher at Keiwa College I was lucky to have the opportunity to teach such a range of subjects to a wide variety of students in nice small classes. Keiwa College is unique in offering small classes which allows for individual interaction with teachers and a friendly class atmosphere. This is so important for effective language learning, but rare in universities in Japan. Getting students to speak English is not always easy in Japan, but I tried to make my classes enjoyable and many students responded enthusiastically. It was a pleasure to see my students improve over the 2 years that I taught them.

To my fellow teachers, thank you for all your support and understanding! To my students,good luck with your studies and job-hunting! I hope you can enjoy and appreciate using your English skills throughout your lives!

新発田で豊かでやりがいのある2年間を過ごしてきましたが、娘が生まれたため、妻の出身地である神戸近辺に引っ越すのがよいだろうと考えました。この2年間で、新潟の数多くの美しい土地や佐渡、また近隣のすばらしい山々を訪ねることができました。新潟の雪景色のなんと美しいことでしょう。ほとんど積雪のなかった昨年に比べて、今年はずいぶん雪を見ることができ、うれしく思いました。

敬和学園大学では、小人数クラスでさまざまな科目を個性豊かな学生たちに教えられたことを幸運に思います。敬和の魅力は教員と個別に話せる小人数クラスと、そのフレンドリーな授業の雰囲気にあると思います。これは学習効果をあげる上で大変重要なことですが、日本の大学ではめったにこの形態がとられていません。学生たちに英語で話させるのは、日本ではいつもうまくいくとは限りませんが、できるだけ楽しい授業にすることで学生たちから熱心な反応が返ってきました。この2年間で彼らが力を伸ばしていくのを見るのは、実にうれしいことでした。

同僚の先生方、これまでのサポートとご理解をありがとうございます。学生の皆さん、学業と就職活動にがんばってください。これから先の人生でも、皆さんが英語を使う楽しさを味わうとともに、英語が使えてよかったと思われるように願っています。
